The reason is usually not distrust of the metal but a specific task. Incoming inspection at a plant where critical parts are made from the batch checks the grade before production starts. Who performs laboratory steel analysis

There are three levels of testing. The first is the manufacturer's plant laboratory: it issues a quality certificate for the batch, and this is the basic document. The second is an independent accredited laboratory: it works on the customer's order and is answerable to the customer for the result. The third is third-party inspection, when a batch has to be checked on site: sampling, marking, weight, condition of the packaging.

The methods differ by task. Chemical and spectral analysis answer the question "which grade is this". Mechanical tests — tensile, hardness, impact — show how the metal behaves under load. The standard sets the set of checks. For sheet, ГОСТ 5582, 7350 and 19903 are used as a guide; for pipes, ГОСТ 9941 and 9940; for long products, ГОСТ 2590 and 2591; grades and compositions are described by ГОСТ 5632. Imported supplies follow ASTM, ASME and EN 10088. The principle is the same: first the acceptance standard is determined, then the set of tests is selected for it, not the other way round.

How long expertise takes

The timeframe depends on the set of tests, not on the length of the price list. Spectral composition analysis takes less time than a full programme with mechanical tests, and corrosion resistance tests take longer because they include holding of the specimens. Sample preparation, on-site sampling and the laboratory's workload add extra time.
