ГОСТ 9941 and 9940: stainless steel pipes

Seamless stainless pipe to ГОСТ is divided into two large groups by production method. ГОСТ 9941 covers cold- and warm-deformed pipes, ГОСТ 9940 covers hot-deformed ones.

The entry "seamless stainless pipe 12Х18Н10Т ГОСТ 9941-81" means a cold-deformed seamless pipe, and the range, the wall accuracy and the set of tests all depend on this.

Below — what the difference between the groups is, how the range is structured, what tests the pipes undergo and when ТУ appear instead of ГОСТ.

Cold-deformed and hot-deformed

The difference between the groups is not only in the technology but also in the sizes and the accuracy they give.

Cold-deformed (ГОСТ 9941). The pipe is drawn in the cold state, so the wall comes out more even and the tolerance for diameter and thickness is tighter. These are pipes of small and medium diameters with thin and medium walls: heat exchangers, instrumentation, precision structures, food equipment, decorative elements.

Hot-deformed (ГОСТ 9940). The pipe is rolled at high temperature. This technology allows large diameters and thick walls, but the accuracy is lower and the surface is rougher. These are pipes for pressure, for load-bearing structures, for further machining.

Feature ГОСТ 9941 ГОСТ 9940
Production method cold and warm deformation hot deformation
Wall accuracy higher lower
Diameter small and medium medium and large
Wall thin and medium medium and thick
Surface more even rougher, scale possible
Typical application heat exchangers, food equipment, precision structures pressure, load-bearing structures, machining
Length fixed, random, multiple fixed, random, multiple

Thick-walled pipe is a separate matter. As the wall-to-diameter ratio grows, so do the requirements for metal homogeneity and inspection. If an order says "thick-walled stainless pipe ГОСТ", clarify the production method: both the actual geometry and the cutting price depend on it.

Welded pipe. Seam pipe is standardised by separate standards and ТУ. It is cheaper than seamless, has an even wall along its whole length and is well suited to decor, handrails, frames, non-critical pipelines. The weak point is the seam: if the pipe goes under pressure or into an aggressive environment, the weld seam becomes a separate object of inspection.

Product range

The range of pipes sets combinations of outside diameter, wall thickness and length. Not every combination exists: the thicker the wall at a small diameter, the less likely it is to find such a pipe in stock.

What is stated in an order:

  • outside diameter — the main dimension;
  • wall thickness — the second most important, it is what determines strength and weight;
  • length — fixed, random or multiple;
  • production method — seamless cold-deformed, hot-deformed or welded;
  • steel grade — 12Х18Н10Т, AISI 304, 316L and so on;
  • surface — ground, mirror, industrial, pickled.

On the GCX exchange round pipe is offered in diameters from 16 to 108 mm, typical lengths — 6000 mm. See the exact list of positions in the catalogue: it states diameter, wall, grade and surface. Profile pipe has its own range: square 20×20–50×50 and rectangle 40×20, 60×40 mm.

Accuracy. As with sheet, pipes are standardised for accuracy in diameter and wall. Increased accuracy is needed where the pipe goes into assembly, into a heat exchanger or for expansion. For decorative structures normal accuracy is enough.

What is checked at pipe acceptance.

Parameter How it is checked What it affects
Outside diameter measurement in several cross-sections assembly, expansion, brazing
Wall thickness measurement at the end face and along the length strength and weight
Ovality difference of diameters in one cross-section centring, joint welding
Curvature gap between the pipe and a flat surface installation, bending
Length measurement of the length, check against the consignment note cutting and waste
Surface inspection: scabs, laps, cracks, scale corrosion and appearance
Weld seam inspection and, if necessary, non-destructive testing tightness and strength

Pipe is the only type of rolled product where inspection of the internal cavity is added to geometry. For pressure pipes and food lines the cleanliness of the inner surface is also checked: it is standardised separately and may be stated in the certificate as part of the delivery condition.

Tests

The standard determines not only the dimensions but also which tests the pipe must pass. The set depends on the production method, the grade and the purpose.

Test What it shows When it is especially important
Hydraulic pressure tightness and wall strength pressure pipes
Flattening plasticity of the metal bending, installation, deformation
Flanging edge quality and plasticity joints, expansion
Tensile test strength and elongation structural parts
Chemical composition control compliance with the grade any delivery
Surface control absence of scabs, laps, cracks decor, food equipment

For welded pipes the inspection of the seam is added to this. The method ranges from visual inspection to non-destructive testing, depending on the purpose and the customer's requirements.

Chemical analysis is a basic test confirming the grade. For 12Х18Н10Т it shows 0.12% carbon, 18% chromium, 10% nickel and titanium within the limits set by the standard for the grades. It is composition that most often produces discrepancies between the order and the actual goods.

Hydrostatic test and seam inspection. Hydraulic pressure confirms that the wall withstands the load and the pipe is tight. For welded pipes seam inspection is added to it: from visual examination to non-destructive methods. If the pipe goes under pressure, the absence of the results of these tests in the certificate is grounds not to accept the batch until matters are clarified.

Common mistakes when ordering pipe. The first is to state only the diameter: without the wall neither strength nor weight is clear. The second is to confuse seamless and welded pipe: these are different standards and different positions. The third is not to specify the surface, although ground and mirror differ both in appearance and in processing. The fourth is not to state the length and its type: fixed and random give different cutting. The fifth is to accept a pressure pipe without test results.

If the standard in the certificate is not the right one. Compare the requirements, not the name: grade, production method, size and accuracy, set of tests. If the discrepancy affects critical parameters, file a claim before signing the acceptance.

Important: see the current text of the standard and the batch certificate for the specific test norms and numerical tolerances. Paraphrases and old editions give discrepancies that turn into a dispute at acceptance.

ТУ versus ГОСТ

ТУ are the manufacturer's technical specifications. They are used to produce what is not in ГОСТ: a non-standard diameter, a transitional grade, a special finish, a combination of "welded pipe with the accuracy of a seamless one".

ТУ and ГОСТ should be compared point by point:

  1. Grade and composition. Whether the chemical composition matches what you asked for.
  2. Geometry. Diameter, wall, ovality, curvature — to which tolerances.
  3. Tests. Which tests are carried out and which are not.
  4. Acceptance. Who accepts the batch and how, which documents are issued.

If the ТУ cover all the points critical for your task, this is a normal delivery. If the ТУ lack a test that matters to you, agree on it separately or look for pipe to ГОСТ.

A common mistake is to think that "ГОСТ" automatically means seamless pipe. Stainless pipe to ГОСТ can also be welded: what matters is which standard exactly is stated. The second mistake is not to state the accuracy and the surface: the standard allows options, and the supplier is entitled to choose any.

How to read a pipe batch certificate

A certificate for pipe is structured like one for sheet, but adds specific lines. Check in order:

Field What you check
Batch and heat linkage to the marking of the bundle
Steel grade 12Х18Н10Т, 08Х18Н10, 03Х17Н14М2 — as ordered
Manufacturing standard ГОСТ 9941, ГОСТ 9940 or ТУ
Production method seamless cold-deformed, hot-deformed, welded
Size diameter, wall, length, accuracy
Chemical analysis compliance with the grade limits
Mechanical properties strength and elongation
Test results hydraulic, flattening, flanging
Mass net mass of the batch for checking against the consignment note

Production method is a mandatory line. Two pipes of the same size and the same grade, cold-deformed and hot-deformed, differ in both tolerances and surface. If the line is missing, it is unclear what exactly the document confirms.

Batch and heat. A batch may contain metal from several heats. Check the marking of every bundle, not just the top one: mixed grades within a batch are a rare but the most unpleasant situation at acceptance.

Net mass is needed for calculating the match and logistics. Gross mass includes the packaging and is not suitable for this purpose. Check the net mass separately against the consignment note: it is used to calculate the match and the loading of transport.

Disputed situations at acceptance

Situation What to do before signing
Wall thinner than ordered measure in several cross-sections, check against the accuracy, record by an act
Ovality and curvature higher than expected assess by assembly: if the pipe does not fit the assembly, file a claim
Scale and rough surface check against the stated surface, photograph
Traces of straightening or seam cleaning clarify with the supplier: this may be a violation of the delivery condition
Seam with defects do not accept a pressure pipe without the results of seam inspection
Certificate without a production method request a supplement before signing
A welded pipe arrived instead of a seamless one check against the order: these are different positions and different standards

Separately about length: fixed, random and multiple are different delivery terms. If the order stated a fixed length and bundles of a different length arrived, this is a discrepancy, even when the metal is of good quality.

How the standard relates to the application

Task What to look at Why
Heat exchanger seamless cold-deformed, wall accuracy thin wall and stable size
Pressure pipeline production method, hydrostatic test results tightness and strength
Food line grade, surface, cleanliness of the inner cavity washing and sanitation
High temperatures a heat-resistant grade, for example 12Х18Н10Т oxidation and creep
Chloride environment molybdenum in the composition: 316L and above pitting corrosion
Decorative structure surface: ground or mirror appearance
Bending on site elongation and delivery condition cracks at the bend

For welding, grades with low carbon or titanium are used: 03Х18Н11, 03Х17Н14М2, 12Х18Н10Т. For heat exchangers not only the grade matters but also the wall accuracy — the thermal calculation depends on it. For decor the surface decides, and the test requirements can be relaxed. If the metal goes into a critical assembly, check not only the grade but also the production method: the tolerances and surface depend on it.

Frequently asked questions

How does ГОСТ 9941 differ from ГОСТ 9940?

By the production method. ГОСТ 9941 covers cold- and warm-deformed pipes with a more accurate wall and a more even surface. ГОСТ 9940 covers hot-deformed ones, with larger diameters and thicknesses but wider tolerances.

What pipe sizes are there to ГОСТ?

The range sets combinations of outside diameter, wall and length. The exact list depends on the standard and the production method. The exchange offers round pipes 16–108 mm in diameter, 6000 mm long; the full list is in the catalogue.

How does seamless pipe differ from electric-welded pipe?

Seamless has no seam and better withstands pressure and an aggressive environment. Electric-welded is cheaper, has an even wall and is suitable for decor, frames and non-critical pipelines. For pressure and chemicals the seam becomes a separate object of inspection.

What tests does a pipe to ГОСТ undergo?

Hydraulic pressure, flattening, flanging, tensile test, control of chemical composition and surface. For welded pipes seam inspection is added. The set of tests depends on the purpose of the pipe and is stated in the standard and the certificate.

What is thick-walled stainless pipe to ГОСТ?

It is a pipe with a large ratio of wall thickness to diameter. Such pipes are more often made by hot deformation; the requirements for metal homogeneity and inspection are higher. In the order be sure to state the production method and the accuracy.

Why is a pipe offered to ТУ and not to ГОСТ?

It means the required combination of sizes, grade or finish is not in ГОСТ, or the manufacturer produces its own line. Compare the ТУ with ГОСТ by composition, geometry, tests and acceptance. If the critical points are covered, the delivery is workable.

Should the pipe surface be stated in the order?

Yes. Ground, mirror and industrial surfaces are different positions, and only what is stated goes into the trade. The surface affects the appearance, the behaviour in the environment and further processing.

How does a fixed pipe length differ from a random one?

Fixed is a pre-set length of the pipe; random is a length within a range; multiple is a length divisible by a set size. Fixed is more convenient for cutting, while random is often taken for bending and installation. The term is fixed in the order before matching.

Place an order for pipe

On the GCX exchange, round pipe of AISI 201, 304 and 316L with a diameter of 16–108 mm and profile pipe are traded — square 20×20–50×50, rectangle 40×20 and 60×40. An order fixes the grade, size, surface and shipment week.
