ГОСТ standards for stainless steel products: a full guide
A ГОСТ standard for stainless steel products is responsible for what exactly will be delivered to you: the steel grade, the geometry, the rolling accuracy, the set of tests and the acceptance rules.
The same 12Х18Н10Т to ГОСТ can arrive in different versions, and the standard chosen determines both the dimensions and the tolerances, and which documents the seller is obliged to attach to the batch.
Below — the logic of the ГОСТ system, the division by types of rolled steel, the place of ТУ and imported equivalents such as AISI 304, and the procedure for checking a delivery that removes most disputes before the acceptance is signed.
Why ГОСТ standards are needed
A standard is a pre-agreed contract between the manufacturer and the consumer about what counts as acceptable metal. It does not describe how to weld or bend; it describes what must arrive at the site and how to check it.
The ГОСТ system is arranged on two levels. There are standards for steel grades: ГОСТ 5632 sets the chemical composition and properties of the grades. There are standards for the product range and technical requirements of a specific type of rolled product: sheet, pipe, round bar, angle. When buying rolled steel, you always rely on both levels — you take the grade from one document, and the dimensions and acceptance from another.
12Х18Н10Т ГОСТ is the most frequent entry in an order. It reads like this: grade 12Х18Н10Т to ГОСТ 5632, and then the standard for the rolled product is specified, because without it it is unclear whether it is sheet, pipe or round bar.
| Level of the standard | What it regulates | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Steel grades | composition, properties, purpose | ГОСТ 5632 |
| Product range | dimensions, shape, limit deviations | ГОСТ 2590, 2591 |
| Technical conditions | accuracy, tests, acceptance | ГОСТ 5582, 9941 |
| Control methods | how the tests are carried out | standards for methods |
The practical conclusion is simple: it is not enough to write "stainless steel to ГОСТ" in the specification. You need the grade, the type of rolled product, the size, the accuracy and the standard — otherwise the supplier is entitled to deliver any equivalent.
Sections by type of rolled product
Each type of rolled product lives in its own set of standards. Below is a working map that is convenient for assembling a specification.
| Type of rolled product | What to look at | AISI equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet, flat bar | ГОСТ 5582 (cold-rolled thin sheet), ГОСТ 7350 (thick sheet), ГОСТ 19903 (sheet product range) | 304, 316L, 430 |
| Seamless pipe | ГОСТ 9941 (cold- and warm-deformed), ГОСТ 9940 (hot-deformed) | 304, 316L, 321 |
| Welded pipe | standard for welded pipes and the manufacturer's ТУ | 304, 201 |
| Round bar | ГОСТ 2590 (hot-rolled), ГОСТ 2591 (product range) | 304, 316L, 201 |
| Calibrated round bar | standard for calibrated rolled steel | 304, 316L |
| Angle, hexagon | standard for long products | 304 |
| Fasteners | ГОСТ for fasteners, DIN 975 for threaded rod | 304, 316 |
Sheet. Here it is important to separate the product range from the technical conditions: one standard is responsible for which thicknesses and formats exist at all, the other for the rolling accuracy, the edge and acceptance. By ordering "sheet 12Х18Н10Т ГОСТ 5582", you are asking for cold-rolled sheet of a certain accuracy, not simply metal of the required grade.
Pipes. The division is by method of production. Seamless cold-deformed pipe and hot-deformed pipe are different standards with a different product range and different tests. Welded pipe is standardised separately, and its characteristics are closer to the sheet from which it is made.
Long products. Round bar, hexagon and angle follow the standards for long products. For calibrated round bar, requirements for accuracy and surface cleanliness are added — this is no longer hot-rolled product but a separate group.
ТУ and imported equivalents
ТУ — technical conditions — is the standard of a specific manufacturer. It does not cancel ГОСТ, but it allows the production of items that do not fit ГОСТ: a non-standard size, a transitional grade, a special surface. If you are offered a pipe "to ТУ", it is not a defect. It is a different document, and it must be compared with ГОСТ point by point, not by name.
With imported grades everything is more complicated, because AISI 304 ГОСТ does not exist as a single entry. AISI 304 is a grade in the American system, and its Russian equivalent is 08Х18Н10. Similarly, AISI 316 ГОСТ corresponds to 10Х17Н13М2, and 316L to 03Х17Н14М2. The full equivalence table is in a separate analysis of the grades.
| Imported grade | ГОСТ equivalent | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| AISI 304 | 08Х18Н10 | water, food environments, general mechanical engineering |
| AISI 304L | 03Х18Н11 | welded structures without heat treatment |
| AISI 316 | 10Х17Н13М2 | chlorides, chemicals, marine environment |
| AISI 316L | 03Х17Н14М2 | the same, plus welding without annealing |
| AISI 321 | 12Х18Н10Т | heating, welded structures |
| AISI 430 | 12Х17 | decor, household appliances, interior finishing |
| AISI 201 | 12Х15Г9НД | interiors, furniture, handrails |
An important nuance. A grade equivalence describes a similarity of composition, not full interchangeability. If the certificate states AISI 304 to ASTM while the specification had 08Х18Н10 to ГОСТ, that is not automatically the same thing: both the dimensional tolerances and the acceptance rules differ. Accept such a substitution calmly only where the environment is not aggressive and the geometry is not critical.
If the environment is aggressive or the part is critical, the only correct route is to state the grade and the standard directly in the order and to verify the certificate by composition.
How to check a delivery
The check begins not at the moment of unloading but when the order is worded. The more precisely the standard is stated, the fewer grounds there are for discrepancies.
- Compare the specification with the certificate. Grade, standard, size, accuracy, heat number. If the certificate gives a standard for the product range while the order had a standard for technical conditions, that is already a discrepancy.
- Check the geometry. Thickness, diameter, length, edge. The rolling accuracy in a standard is normalised by a range, not by a single number, so measurements are taken at several points.
- Inspect the surface. Laps, rolled-in scale, pickling marks, scratches — for sheet and pipe the surface requirements are set out separately.
- Check the marking. It must make it possible to link a specific pack or pipe to the batch certificate.
- Check that the documents are complete. A quality certificate for the batch is the basic document. If the delivery is to ТУ, the certificate must refer to that ТУ, not to ГОСТ.
Disputed situations on acceptance. Most disputes arise not from counterfeits but from the wording of the specification. Typical cases and the procedure to follow:
- Thickness or diameter outside the stated accuracy. Measure at several points and record the result in a report before signing. If the accuracy is not stated in the order, compare the measurement with the tolerance of the standard — the supplier is entitled to apply ordinary accuracy.
- Edge and surface. Laps, rolled-in scale, coarse grinding, pickling marks are grounds for a claim. Photograph before unloading and state the defect in the report.
- The marking is illegible or does not match the certificate. Do not sign the acceptance: without a link to the batch the certificate loses its force.
- The documents are incomplete. No batch certificate, no reference to a standard, the composition given only in part — request a supplement rather than taking it on trust.
- The standard in the certificate is different. Compare the requirements, not the name of the document. If the discrepancy affects critical parameters, file a claim before acceptance.
A common mistake is to accept metal "on the fact that a certificate exists" without reading it. The certificate confirms that the batch was produced to a document, but does not confirm that the document is the one you asked for. The second common mistake is to treat magnetism as proof of the grade: austenitic grades are weakly magnetic after annealing and noticeably magnetic after cold deformation.
How to read a batch certificate
The quality certificate is the only document that links a specific batch to the requirements of the standard. It must be read line by line: each line closes its own item of acceptance.
| Certificate field | What you compare | Frequent discrepancy |
|---|---|---|
| Batch and heat number | matches the marking of the pack or tag | there is one certificate but several packs |
| Steel grade | matches the order: 12Х18Н10Т, 08Х18Н10, AISI 304 | the grade is given "by equivalent" |
| Manufacturing standard | the document that was in the specification | a product-range standard is given instead of the ТУ |
| Chemical analysis | mass fractions of the elements within the grade limits | the composition is given only in part |
| Mechanical properties | tensile strength, elongation | norms instead of actual values |
| Size and mass | nominal, accuracy, net mass | gross mass instead of net |
| Surface and condition | 2B, BA, mirror, heat treatment | the delivery condition is not stated |
A heat and a batch are not the same thing. A heat is one melt of steel from the furnace; a batch is what has been shipped under one document. A batch may contain metal from several heats, and one heat goes into several batches. For acceptance this matters: if the heats are listed, verify the marking of every pack, not only the top one.
Chemical analysis confirms the grade. Look not for the presence of figures but for compliance with the limits set by the standard for the grades. A "typical" composition without a reference to the standard is reference information, not confirmation.
Mechanical properties show that the metal has undergone the necessary heat treatment. For welded structures and parts under load these values matter more than for decorative elements.
Mass. In the certificate and the delivery note, distinguish net from gross: for information you need the net mass, and the packaging and wrapping are not included in it.
Manufacturing standard. If the batch was produced to a ТУ, the certificate must refer to that very ТУ. A reference to ГОСТ when supplying to a ТУ is a direct discrepancy, and it must be removed before the acceptance is signed.
How the standard relates to the application
The standard is chosen for the technology and the environment, not "by how respectable it is". The same rolled product behaves differently depending on what will be done with it later.
| Task | What to look at in the standard | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Welding a structure | a grade with low carbon or titanium, the delivery condition | carbon precipitates at grain boundaries, the weld corrodes |
| Bending and stamping | elongation, requirements for the edge | metal with low ductility cracks at the bend |
| Food environments | the grade, the surface quality, complete removal of scale | roughness retains contaminants |
| High temperatures | a heat-resistant grade, stability of properties when heated | ordinary austenite oxidises and loses strength |
| Working under pressure | the set of tests and the method of production | the wall and the weld require separate inspection |
| Aggressive environment | molybdenum in the composition, requirements for the surface | chlorides cause pitting |
| Precision machining | the accuracy class, the delivery condition | variation in size breaks the machine setting |
For welding. Take grades with low carbon or with titanium: 03Х18Н11, 03Х17Н14М2, 12Х18Н10Т. The standard also sets the delivery condition: heat-treated metal behaves more predictably in welding.
For bending and stamping. Elongation and the requirements for the edge decide it. Thin cold-rolled sheet with a smooth edge bends more evenly than hot-rolled sheet with a rough surface and scale.
For food environments. Besides the grade, the surface matters: 2B, BA and mirror polishing are cleaned in different ways. The surface requirements are set out in the standard and reflected in the certificate.
For high temperatures. Here the grade decides, not the standard for the rolled product: 12Х18Н10Т withstands heating better than 08Х18Н10 thanks to the titanium. The standard fixes that the metal is supplied in the required condition.
For pressure and an aggressive environment. The set of tests is part of the standard. If the required test is not provided for by it, it is stipulated separately, otherwise there will be nothing with which to confirm the behaviour of the part.
Frequently asked questions
What is ГОСТ 5632-72?
It is the standard for grades of high-alloy steels and alloys. It sets the chemical composition of the grades, including 12Х18Н10Т, their properties and the field of application. The product range of rolled steel — dimensions, tolerances, acceptance — is standardised by separate standards for sheet, pipe, round bar or angle.
Where can I find the chemical composition of 12Х18Н10Т to ГОСТ?
In the standard for the grades itself. The decoding of the grade is read directly from the name: 0.12% carbon, 18% chromium, 10% nickel, titanium. Take the exact limits for each element and the permissible deviations from the text of the standard and the batch certificate, not from retellings.
Which ГОСТ does AISI 304 have?
There is no direct equivalence "AISI 304 = one ГОСТ". The Russian equivalent by composition is 08Х18Н10, and it is described in the standard for the grades. Then the standard for the rolled product is chosen by type of product: sheet, pipe, round bar. In the certificate, look at both designations.
Is there a ГОСТ for stainless steel fasteners?
Yes, fasteners are standardised by their own standards for the specific type of item — bolt, nut, threaded rod. For imported fasteners DIN 975 is often found; it is the standard for threaded rod. When purchasing, state the steel grade, the standard for the item and the coating, if there is one.
How does a ТУ differ from a ГОСТ?
A ТУ is the technical conditions of a specific manufacturer. They may describe products that are not in ГОСТ: a non-standard size, a transitional grade, a special finish. A ТУ is not automatically worse or better — it must be compared with ГОСТ against specific requirements for composition, geometry and acceptance.
Is the modulus of elasticity needed when purchasing?
The modulus of elasticity is a design characteristic for the engineer; it is needed in design, not in the acceptance of metal. For calculations, check the value in a reference book for the specific grade; this characteristic is not stated in an order on the exchange.
What should I do if the certificate has a different standard?
Compare not the name but the requirements: grade, size, accuracy, set of tests. If the discrepancy affects parameters critical for your task, file a claim before acceptance. If the metal is non-critical and the discrepancy concerns only the form of the document, the decision is yours as the buyer.
What should I do if the accuracy is not stated in the order?
In that case the standard permits ordinary accuracy, and the supplier is entitled to apply it. Check the actual dimensions on acceptance and compare them with the tolerances of the standard. If the task requires increased accuracy, state it in the order in advance — before the trade.
Place an order with a precise standard
On the GCX exchange an order fixes the type of rolled product, the grade, the size, the surface and the shipment week — the standard and the characteristics are carried into the trade without renegotiation. An order does not match with itself or with an order from a colleague at the same company.
