Buying and selling

How to sell stainless steel: sales channels

Surplus steel products sell fastest where the buyer is looking for that exact size, not for "stainless steel in general".

The practical order is this: describe the lot precisely, choose the channel to match your urgency, fix the basis and the shipment week, prepare the documents in advance. After that comes the routine that decides whether the lot goes in a week or sits for a quarter.

Who to sell surplus steel products to

There are few types of buyer for stainless steel, and each has its own requirements.

Buyer What they buy What matters to them
Processor, preparation shop Sheet, pipe, round bar for cutting Precise geometry, a stable grade, regularity
Trader and metal depot Fast-moving sizes in batches Documents, batch homogeneity, speed of the trade
Construction contractor Structural pipe, angle, sheet Deadlines, basis, completeness by line item
Food and chemical production 304, 316L, sheet and pipe Grade, surface, certificate, batch passport
Repair and service teams Small batches for a specific job Availability here and now, readiness to ship
Scrap dealer Slow-moving stock, offcuts, off-grade material An honest description of condition, weight, documents

The mistake is to send the same lot to everyone. A processor needs length in metres, a trader needs tonnage, a contractor needs a complete set. The same metal is described differently.

Cold calling versus the platform

Cold calling gives you live contact and a quick answer, but it scales poorly: every call means telling the story of the lot all over again. The platform gives simultaneous access to those already looking for your size, but it demands a precise order. It is not either/or: it makes sense to keep both channels.

Criterion Cold calling and personal contacts Exchange platform
Speed of first contact High with people you know Depends on activity in your market
Reach Only your own base All participants in the relevant market
Comparability of terms Low, every conversation is different Order parameters are the same for everyone
Pressure on price High, they bargain over your name Lower: the parties are anonymous until matching
Paperwork A contract every time Matching records the trade
Anonymity No Yes: the parties appear as buyer and seller

On the platform an order is binding and lives in one market: one commodity, one currency, one unit of quantity. Delivery points must overlap. An unmatched order expires on the Monday of its shipment week and holds no money — the balance for placing an order is $10.

How to present remnants

A lot sells by description, not by persuasion. A good description answers the questions the buyer will ask anyway and removes half the grounds for haggling.

  • Type of rolled steel and the exact size: sheet thickness and format, pipe diameter and wall thickness, round bar diameter.
  • Grade and standard: AISI or ГОСТ, stating what confirms it.
  • Surface: 2B, BA, mirror, №4, hot-rolled, calibrated.
  • Volume in one unit: tonnes, metres or pieces — no "approximately".
  • Condition: new, from storage, remnants, off-grade. If there are defects, name them plainly.
  • Terms: Incoterms basis, mode of transport, shipment week.
  • Documents: what you hold and what you are ready to hand over.

Photographs settle more than a paragraph of text: the end face, the edge, the marking, the packaging, the stack. Shoot in good light and without retouching.

Documents and shipment

Prepare the documents before the lot goes. This speeds up the trade and removes questions at acceptance.

Stage What is needed
Before the order Confirmation of grade and batch, quality certificate
Matching The fixed commodity, volume, currency, basis, shipment week
Shipment UPD, transport documents, packaging and marking
Acceptance by the buyer Acceptance report, verification of geometry and weight
Closing Exchange of documents on time, return of the deposit to both sides

24 hours are allowed to confirm the trade and 5 days to exchange and accept documents. The first countdown starts from the moment of matching. Missing a deadline means losing your deposit, so it is better to withdraw from the trade within the rules than to drag it out.

Common mistakes

The first is to hold a "same as the neighbour" price on a slow-moving size. The market values not metal in general, but a specific item for a specific job. The second is to hide defects: they are visible at acceptance anyway, but by then you have already lost time and the deposit. The third is to place an order for a volume that is not in the warehouse, "just in case". An order is binding.

The fourth is to confuse the basis. If the order says self-collection and the buyer believes you are delivering, the dispute will not be decided in your favour. The fifth is not to check whether your order will match an order from a colleague at the same company: the platform does not carry out such matches, but neither will it protect you from having placed two conflicting lots.

Frequently asked questions

How to sell stainless steel wholesale when there are few buyers in the region

Put the lot on a platform with wide reach and specify a basis with delivery to a hub you can manage. The ability to ship to another region is often worth more than an extra per cent on the price.

How to sell stainless steel remnants from storage

Describe the condition honestly and precisely: storage conditions, whether packaging is present, traces of corrosion and scoring. Remnants with documents sell noticeably more easily than metal with no confirmation of grade.

What to do with offcuts and off-grade material

This is a separate market. Describe the lot as off-grade material or offcuts, stating the dimensions, weight and defects. Do not mix slow-moving stock with fast-moving metal in one order.

How the exchange differs from calling clients

Cold calling is targeted work through your own base. The exchange matches binding orders and records the trade, while settlement and delivery go on between the parties. The fee is 0.50% of the trade amount from each side, no more than $500, charged in USD.

Which documents are needed for shipment

The basic set: a quality certificate or batch passport, UPD, transport documents. Agree the exact composition with the buyer before shipment — the exchange does not read or check documents.

What to do if the buyer does not respond

Within the platform the deposit does the work: the party whose move it was and who missed the deadline loses its deposit, and the other gets its own back in full. Everything further is under the contract between the parties.

Can slow-moving items be sold together with fast-moving ones

No: an order is one commodity, one currency, one unit of quantity. Mixing items makes the order unmatchable. Split it into separate lots.
