How to buy stainless steel wholesale
To buy stainless steel wholesale means first describing the task and then looking for volume. Before the request, fix five parameters: grade, size, surface, batch volume and shipment week.
If one of them "floats", offers will be incomparable, and the conversation will drift into converting tonnes into metres and back.
Where to start if you need to buy stainless steel wholesale
Start with the grade. For general industrial tasks people most often look at 304 and 316L, economy options are 201 and 430, food and aggressive environments require a separate analysis. The grade sets not only corrosion resistance but the whole subsequent calculation: the density of different grades is close, but the difference in alloying changes both the price and the behaviour in service.
Next comes the size. In the GCX catalogue this is round pipe, profile pipe, sheet, round bar and angle. Each type of rolled product has its own important indicators: for sheet — thickness and format, for pipe — diameter or section and wall, for round bar — diameter and method of production.
The third parameter is surface and standard. 2B, BA, mirror, №4 ground, hot-rolled, calibrated — these are different production chains, and they are not interchangeable in price or application. Fix the standard at once: ГОСТ, ASTM, EN. "Just stainless steel" in an order turns into a dispute at acceptance.
Then volume and shipment week. The week is an ISO week, Monday–Sunday, and it must match exactly. Plus the delivery basis and the mode of transport: they are set in advance and carried into the trade without renegotiation.
How to calculate the price per tonne and per metre
The practical difficulty of wholesale is that metal is sold in tonnes but used in metres and square metres. The conversion is pure arithmetic: weight equals volume multiplied by density, and for stainless steel this is approximately 7.9 g/cm³.
| Type of rolled product | What you need to know | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet | Thickness, width, length | Weight of the sheet and weight of 1 m² |
| Round pipe | Outer diameter, wall, length | Weight of 1 linear metre |
| Profile pipe | Section (square, rectangle), wall | Weight of 1 metre and length in metres per tonne |
| Round bar | Diameter, length | Weight of 1 metre, length in metres per tonne |
| Angle | Flange and thickness | Weight of 1 metre |
Calculate not the "price per kilogram" but the cost of closing the task: how many metres or squares you need, what weight that is, how much remnant will go to scrap. Often a batch selected for cutting works out more profitable than a batch with a lower price per tonne but a larger amount of waste.
Do not put an "average price of stainless steel" from a search into the calculation. The price depends on the grade, size, surface, batch volume, logistics and basis — see current reference points on the Prices and quotations page, not in someone else's estimate.
What to check in a delivery
Acceptance is not a formality. Check point by point and record the result in writing.
- Documents: quality certificate, batch passport, UPD (universal transfer document). Check the grade and heat against the order.
- Marking: tags, stamps, traces of marker on the ends and packaging.
- Geometry: thickness and diameter within tolerance, no ovality, kinks, burrs on the edge.
- Surface: corresponds to the declared finish, without scratches, dents, traces of corrosion and scale.
- Mass: actual weighing against the calculated one. A discrepancy is a reason for analysis before signing.
- Packaging: paper, film, lathing, spacers between sheets.
If the requirements are strict, agree on laboratory testing in advance: who takes samples, who pays, within what time the result arrives. After signing the act it is harder to prove anything.
Common mistakes
The first is saving on the grade where the environment is aggressive. 201 or 430 on chlorides and in a wet zone will cost more than 316L straight away. The second is ordering a tolerance tighter than the structure needs: you pay for precision that does not affect operation. The third is ignoring the basis: the price "delivered to warehouse" and the price "ex-works collection" are different figures, and they cannot be compared directly.
The fourth mistake is buying volume without checking offcuts and remnants in the warehouse. Sometimes the required size is already in remnants, and that is faster than waiting for rolling. The fifth is calculating in one unit and ordering in another. One unit of quantity per order: either tonnes, or metres, or pieces.
Frequently asked questions
Where to buy stainless steel wholesale
There are three options: directly from the manufacturer or a trader, through a metal depot and through an exchange platform. The exchange is convenient because the order is binding, the parameters are fixed, and anonymity removes pressure in negotiations.
Where to buy stainless pipe of the required diameter
Look at the product range by size: round pipe runs from 16 to 108 mm, profile — square 20×20–50×50 and rectangle 40×20 and 60×40. If the required size is not in stock, you will have to wait for it by shipment week.
Buying 2 mm stainless steel — is it sheet or pipe
Most often it is sheet 2 mm thick. For pipe the thickness is stated as the wall, and it is selected together with the diameter. Formulate the request more fully: type of rolled product, size, grade, surface.
Buying stainless metal cheaper — what to do for that
Compare offers in one unit and on one basis, select the batch for cutting, reduce requirements to what is really needed. A discount "for volume" without a change of basis and tolerances is a different conversation.
What is ordered most often
In the GCX catalogue the largest number of items is for round pipe and sheet. This does not mean that they suit everyone: the choice comes from the environment, the load and the method of processing, not from the frequency of orders.
Is a certificate needed for stainless steel
For most B2B trades, yes: the document confirms the grade and the batch. The exchange does not read or check documents, so agree the composition of documents and the acceptance procedure with the counterparty directly.
How to place an order correctly
One commodity, one currency, one unit of quantity, overlapping delivery points. An unmatched order expires on the Monday of its shipment week and does not hold money. The balance for placing an order is $10.
