Bending stainless steel: radii and springback

The minimum bending radius of stainless steel depends on the grade, thickness and condition of the metal, and austenitic grades spring back after the load is removed, so the angle is set with an allowance.

It is worth not confusing two different products: bent rolled steel, to which shape is given on a machine, and flexible stainless pipe — a corrugated connector that bends by hand thanks to the corrugation, not thanks to the plasticity of the steel.

Minimum radius

The radius is the main parameter of bending. The smaller it is, the higher the deformation of the outer fibre, and the closer the risk of a crack. For austenitic grades 304 and 316 the minimum radius is larger than for carbon steel of the same thickness: the metal is stronger and gives off heat worse, and it work-hardens in the bend zone.

There is no universal figure "the radius equals two thicknesses". The specific minimum is taken from the process or a reference book for the grade, thickness and method of bending, and then confirmed by a trial bend. If the part is critical, the sample is bent from the same batch of metal: different batches behave differently.

Springback and compensation

Springback is the elastic return of the metal after the load is removed. You bend to ninety degrees, release — and get more. The amount of return grows with the strength of the metal, a smaller radius and greater thickness. That is exactly why bending stainless steel requires a correction, and not an exact setting of the angle "by the dial".

It is compensated in three ways. The first is to bend with an allowance: set the angle greater than required by the chosen correction. The second is to calibrate on trial parts from the same batch and record the correction for repeat orders. The third is to use tooling with clamping and coining, which reduces the return by additional compression.

After bending, an austenitic part is more magnetic than the original sheet. This is not a substitution of the grade but a consequence of work hardening: cold deformation changes the structure in the bend zone. If the part is then welded, it is better not to overheat the bend zone additionally, otherwise grain growth will be added to the work hardening.

Tooling

For sheet, work is done on a press brake: the punch sets the inner radius, the die sets the opening. For pipes a pipe bender with a mandrel or former is needed, otherwise the wall will ovalise, and folds will appear on the inner side of the bend. For thin-walled pipes and coils, mandrel bending is used with a former matched to the inner diameter.

What matters in tooling:

  • the punch radius and the die opening are matched to the grade and thickness;
  • the working surface is clean, without particles of carbon steel;
  • lubricant for stainless steel, not waste oil from ferrous scrap;
  • for pipes — a mandrel or former to keep the round section;
  • separate tools for stainless steel if the parts go into food or a damp environment.

Contamination of tooling is an underestimated mistake. A particle of ordinary steel pressed into the surface during bending will give red spots, and the claim will be made against the grade of metal, not the tool. The overall picture of operations is in the article processing of stainless steel.

Typical mistakes

Most bending defects are connected with three causes: too small a radius, the absence of springback compensation and dirty tooling. A list worth checking before starting a batch:

  • bending austenite using settings for carbon steel;
  • reducing the radius for the sake of a compact part and getting a crack along the outer fibre;
  • not taking the rolling direction into account and placing the bend along the unfavourable direction;
  • bending a weld seam in the tension zone without an allowance in the radius;
  • leaving on the part traces of a tool that has worked on ferrous scrap;
  • bending a pipe without a mandrel and getting ovality that prevents a fitting from seating;
  • confusing bent rolled steel with a corrugated connector and choosing metal for the wrong task.

Separately about the last point. Flexible stainless pipe for heating and a flexible connector are a corrugated tube that bends thanks to the geometry of the corrugation. It is assembled by hand and does not require a pipe bender. Bent rolled steel are an ordinary pipe or sheet given shape on a machine. Their tasks, tolerances and acceptance are different, although the metal may be the same.

It is a corrugated tube that bends thanks to the shape of the corrugation, not thanks to the plasticity of the steel. It is used for connectors and heating. This is not bent rolled steel: the metal in both cases may be the same, but the products and the requirements are different.

Can stainless steel be bent after welding

Technically it can, but it is undesirable to place the bend along the seam. The seam and the heat-affected zone have already experienced heating, and additional deformation increases the risk of cracks. If a bend is unavoidable, the radius is increased and a sample is checked.

Does stainless steel become magnetic after bending

Yes, austenitic steel in the bend zone is more magnetic. This is a consequence of work hardening, not a substitution of the grade. It does not affect corrosion resistance under normal conditions, but in an aggressive environment the deformation zone should be protected.
