Weight of a stainless steel sheet: table by thickness
The weight of an AISI 304 stainless steel sheet is calculated like this: thickness in millimetres is multiplied by the area in square metres and by 7.9.
AISI 304 and 12Х18Н10Т have the same density, so a square metre of 2 mm sheet weighs 15.8 kg, and a standard 1250×2500 sheet of it weighs 49.38 kg.

The weight formula
Mass = thickness (mm) × area (m²) × 7.9.
Three working formulas follow from this expression:
- mass of a square metre = thickness × 7.9;
- mass of a sheet = mass of a metre × area of the sheet;
- mass of a batch = mass of a sheet × number of sheets.
The area depends on the format, not on the thickness:

A density of 7.9 g/cm³ is the common value for austenitic grades: AISI 304, 316L, 321, 12Х18Н10Т. For 316L it is about 7.98, and for ferritic 430 about 7.7. For an order and for logistics, 7.9 is used, and if accuracy is needed for a specific batch, the density is checked against the certificate.
How to calculate for a grade that is not in the table. Multiply the result by a correction factor: for 316L by about 1.01, for 430 by 0.975. On a sheet the difference will be tens of grammes, on a batch in tonnes, kilogrammes.

How to use the table. The mass of a metre grows linearly: a 2 mm sheet is 15.8 kg/m², a 4 mm sheet 31.6 kg/m², a 10 mm sheet 79 kg/m². If the thickness you need is not in the table, multiply it by 7.9 to get the mass of a square metre. Thick sheets of 4–10 mm come in the 1500×3000 format, thin ones in both formats.
A simple rule of thumb. A 1250×2500 sheet with an area of 3.125 m² weighs roughly three times the mass of a square metre: at 1 mm, 24.69 kg; at 3 mm, 74.06 kg; at 8 mm, 197.5 kg.
Coil weight
A coil is the same strip wound into a roll, so the mass of a metre is calculated from the width and the thickness.
Mass of 1 m = width (mm) × thickness (mm) × 7.9 / 1000.

Coil mass = mass of a metre × length of the strip. The length is stated by the manufacturer, and the mass of the coil depends on it. The inverse problem is solved by division: a coil of 1250×1.0 strip weighing 4938 kg contains about 500 m.
How to convert to tonnes
Tonnes = thickness (mm) × area (m²) × 7.9 / 1000.
- 100 m² of 2 mm sheet: 2 × 100 × 7.9 = 1580 kg, that is 1.58 t.
- 500 m² of 1.5 mm sheet: 1.5 × 500 × 7.9 = 5925 kg, that is 5.93 t.
- 1 t of 2 mm sheet in the 1250×2500 format: 1000 / 49.38 ≈ 20 sheets.
- 1 t of 1 mm sheet in the 1250×2500 format: 1000 / 24.69 ≈ 40 sheets.
- 1 t of 3 mm sheet in the 1500×3000 format: 1000 / 106.65 ≈ 9 sheets.
The order is this: purchasing is more conveniently counted in sheets or square metres, while logistics and matching are counted in tonnes. The conversion between them is done with one formula, and it is better to check the supplier's invoicing before shipment than after unloading.
A common mistake is to calculate weight by area without taking the actual thickness into account. A sheet produced with a minus tolerance will weigh a few per cent less than the calculated figure. If the batch is large, check which mass it is counted by — theoretical or actual.

It depends on the thickness and the format. 2 mm 1250×2500 sheets — about 20, 1 mm — about 40, and 3 mm 1500×3000 sheets — about 9. The exact number is calculated by dividing 1000 kg by the mass of one sheet.
How do you calculate the weight of perforated sheet?
From the mass of a solid sheet, subtract the share of metal that went into the holes. The share depends on the pattern and the diameter of the perforation, and is stated by the manufacturer. That is why the weight of perforated sheet is always less than the weight of the same solid sheet.
