What makes up the price of stainless steel

The price of stainless steel is made up of several independent parts: the grade component, alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum, the size, the surface, the batch volume, logistics and the delivery basis.

A market quotation is only one of the inputs to the calculation: it describes metal in general, not your lot. Below we look at which parts make up the final amount, why the same grade costs differently from two suppliers, how to compare units of measurement and what to compare in two commercial offers. What makes up the price of stainless steel

It is convenient to break the calculation down into three levels. The first is the market: the general level for a group of grades, the cost of alloying elements, the exchange rate. The second is the goods: the specific grade, size, surface, condition and batch volume. The third is the trade: delivery basis, mode of transport, packaging, urgency, acceptance terms.

The practical conclusion from the table is simple: until the grade, size, surface, volume, basis and shipment week are specified, there is nothing to discuss. Any figure before that will be approximate, and comparing two offers will be incorrect.

Exchange quotations and spot

A quotation and the price of a specific lot are different things. A quotation describes the market for a group of grades and sizes: it is a reference point from which calculations start. Spot is metal that physically exists and can ship in the nearest shipment week. The price of a lot already takes everything into account: your grade, your size, your surface, volume, basis and timing.

There is always a gap between these levels. Urgency carries its own premium, a rare size its own, a small batch its own. So the correct order of work is this: first describe the lot, then compare it with the market reference point, and only then negotiate. If you start with the haggle, you are not negotiating about metal but about a random number.

The delivery basis feeds directly into the price. Incoterms conditions allocate responsibility: under some conditions the seller arranges transport and its cost sits in the price, under others the buyer pays for carriage separately. The metal is the same. Comparing offers on different bases is like comparing weight in kilograms and in pounds.

The shipment week is also part of the price. On the exchange it is an ISO week, Monday to Sunday, and it must match exactly. The basis and mode of transport are set in the order before matching and are carried into the trade without renegotiation. An order becomes binding on matching; an unmatched order holds no money and expires on the Monday of its own shipment week. Hence the rule: do not place a "trial" order at a deliberately unrealistic price just to see how the market reacts.

Currency is a separate part. Trades are in USD, CNY and RUB. The fee is charged in USD, and trades in other currencies are converted at the official Bank of Russia fixing on the trade date, and the rate is recorded together with the trade. This means the currency component does not dissolve in correspondence but is fixed in the document.

Nickel and alloying elements

Chemistry sets the basis of the metal's cost. Chromium creates the passive film and is responsible for corrosion resistance itself. Nickel stabilises the austenitic structure and provides toughness. Molybdenum increases resistance to chlorides. Titanium binds carbon and reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. In economy grades, manganese partially replaces nickel.

Each of these elements is an exchange-traded commodity with its own dynamics. The more expensive alloying elements a grade contains, the more strongly the metal responds to their movement. That is exactly why grades cannot be compared "by name": 304 and 316L differ not in finish but in composition.

The difference between 304 and 316L is molybdenum. Molybdenum is an expensive alloying element, so grades containing it cannot cost the same as grades without it at the same size and surface. If the application involves chlorides — pool water, marine environments, certain chemical media — saving on molybdenum turns into replacing the assembly.

430 is cheaper than austenitic grades because it contains no nickel: it is a chromium-based ferritic steel. It is magnetic and suits less aggressive conditions, but it does not replace 304 where toughness and resistance to chlorides are needed. 201 is also an economy option: part of the nickel is replaced with manganese. That substitution is not always acceptable, and the decision is made by environment, not by price.

It is useful to remember how grade designations decode: 12Х18Н10Т is roughly 0.12% carbon, 18% chromium, 10% nickel and titanium. Such a designation immediately shows which alloying elements determine the cost of the alloy and helps to match a domestic grade against AISI.

Markups and logistics

Next come processing steps and movements. Thin sheet requires more rolling passes per tonne of metal than thick sheet, so the unit cost is higher. A small pipe wall follows the same logic: it is harder to achieve stable geometry. A rare diameter or a non-standard section means a premium for a small batch and changeover.

Logistics is often confused with the price of the metal. These are different sums of money, and in a trade they are separated through the basis and the mode of transport. If the seller arranges delivery under the terms, the transport component sits in the seller's price; if the buyer does, the buyer pays the carrier directly and sees that amount separately.

Surface also costs money. 2B and BA are mill finishes and are mass-produced. A mirror surface and ground №4 involve extra operations, to which higher packaging requirements are added: a scratched mirror finish loses its saleable appearance in transit. Pickling and passivation are another processing step.

Why the price is per tonne but the invoice is per metre

Metal is sold by weight: that is more universal for accounting, storage and transport. But the buyer needs metres of pipe, square metres of sheet or a number of parts. The conversion is arithmetic: weight equals volume multiplied by density, which for stainless steel is about 7.9 g/cm³.

There is one practical trap here: the buyer counts metres but receives an invoice for tonnes, and in the conversion the rounding does not go in the buyer's favour. Check the conversion on your side and keep a weight table to hand.

Price units: tonne, kilogram, metre, sheet

Suppliers quote prices in different units not out of spite, but because it is more convenient for them to account that way. A metal depot counts in tonnes, a retail seller by the sheet or by the metre, a processor by the part or by the cut. All options are acceptable; the only problem is comparison.

To compare fairly, bring both prices to a single unit and a single basis. A convenient technique is to calculate the cost of closing out the job: how many metres or squares you need, what that weighs, how much leftover goes to waste. A batch selected for the cutting plan is often cheaper overall, even if its unit price is not the lowest.

What increases the invoice

On top of the metal price, operations appear on the invoice. It is useful to list them in advance so as not to compare a "bare" price with a turnkey price.

  • Cutting to size. Cutting to your dimensions reduces your waste but adds an operation and offcuts that have to go somewhere.
  • Cutting. Laser, plasma, waterjet, guillotine — different methods, different edge and different operation cost. An edge produced by different methods requires different subsequent processing.
  • Packaging. Film, paper, crating, interleaves between sheets, individual marking. For mirror finish and №4 this is not an option but a necessity.
  • Delivery. Transport, transshipments, loading and unloading. Count not only the haul but also the number of transfers.
  • Basis. The further the seller's zone of responsibility extends, the more operations are inside the price and the less you have to worry about on site.
  • Batch volume. A small, non-standard batch is more expensive per unit: changeover and packaging are spread over less metal.
  • Urgency. If you need the nearest shipment week and metal is not planned for it, your options narrow.
  • Documents and acceptance. Laboratory testing, additional expert examination, paperwork — separate work with its own cost.

The flip side: some of these operations can be removed. For example, give up a tolerance tighter than the structure needs, or an unnecessary surface processing step. Saving starts with an honest answer to the question of what the product actually requires.

What to compare in two quotations to make the comparison fair

When you have two commercial offers in hand, a difference in the figures means nothing yet. Compare them line by line.

The exchange fee is charged in USD. It is not included in the price of the metal and is charged separately, so it is worth keeping it as a separate line in the estimate.

When price is not the main thing

The lowest line in an offer often turns out to be the most expensive purchase. There are factors more important than the unit price.

  • Documents and origin. If the grade cannot be confirmed by a certificate, the risk falls on you. The exchange does not read or verify documents — that is the parties' job.
  • Timing. A missed shipment week halts production, and downtime costs more than the difference in metal price.
  • Consistency. A supplier that holds grade and geometry from batch to batch saves you time on incoming inspection.
  • Willingness to discuss acceptance. The procedure for dealing with discrepancies is best agreed before shipment, not after.
  • Reasonable terms. A clear basis, sensible packaging and predictable logistics reduce your overheads.

The exchange adds a procedural element to this: both sides pay a deposit, the parties are anonymous, and deadlines for confirmation and documents are set. At the same time the platform is not an escrow, does not verify the counterparty and is not responsible for the quality of the metal. The economic substance of the purchase is determined by the contract between the parties, while the platform provides even rules.
